I love this article. It highlights lots of ideas we share at our Pleasure Parties. Guess what? Sex is GOOD for you. (Well, safe sex is good for you!) We talked about this last night at my pleasure party in San Ramon. Those old lame excuses like “I have a headache” or “I am too tired” don’t work anymore. We have evidence now that sex cures headaches and it only takes 7 minutes for most men, so the “no time” excuse doesnt’ work either!  (You may want to take a good look at your excuses and why you are making them.) Sex Feels Good and Is Good For You

When Marvin Gaye sang about “Sexual Healing,” he didn’t know the half of it. Besides being one of life’s greatest pleasures and a boon to intimacy with your partner, a satisfying sex life also can enhance your health in numerous ways. Sure, it can burn calories, relieve stress and help you fall asleep more easily, but these health-promoting effects are just the tip of the iceberg. Learn other healthy reasons to slip between the sheets with your honey.

Rev Up Your Immunity! (CB: Who needs a flu shot if you are having sex a couple times a week?)

Score one for the pleasure principle: Sex, practiced safely and in moderation, could help keep you from getting sick. Research at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA, found that college students who made love once or twice a week had substantially higher levels of immunoglobulin A—or IgA, the body’s first line of defense against colds and flu—compared with those who were either abstinent or had sex three or more times per week.

Ease Pain (CB: Sex for pain management! I know a lot of women who need to READ this section!)

Vaginal stimulation produces a strong pain-blocking effect,  (CB: helllllooooooo) possibly due in part to the release of endorphins—brain chemicals with opioid-like properties. “Stimulation of a woman’s G-spot can elevate the pain threshold by over 100 percent with orgasm and over 80 percent with pleasurable stimulation,” notes Beverly Whipple, Ph.D., R.N., professor emerita at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and co-author with Barry Komisaruk, Ph.D., and Carlos Beyer-Flores, Ph.D., of The Science of Orgasm.

This means vaginal stimulation during a sexually satisfying romp between the sheets—or anywhere else, for that matter—could relieve a headache, menstrual cramps, arthritis pain, even chronic pain, for anywhere from several minutes up to 24 hours. (CB: This adds credibility to my point that 20 minutes of alone time with your Silver Bullet about 2 or 3 days before you cycle will make for a much easier cycle ladies!)

Get Happy, Live Longer

An active sex life may do a body and a marriage good over the years: Sexual satisfaction is closely linked with overall quality of life and increased sense of well-being, for both men and women, at any age. For men, there may even be a longevity benefit: In a study with a 10-year follow up, researchers at the University of Bristol in England examined the relationship between orgasm frequency and mortality among 918 men between the ages of 45 and 59 in South Wales. Conclusion: Mortality risk was 50 percent lower over a 10-year period of time among men who had frequent orgasms (two or more per week) than among those who did less than once a month.

Use It or Lose It (CB: Seriously, ladies, the vagina will atrophy just like any of your other muscles)

In postmenopausal women, frequent sex—three or more times per month—also may help prevent vaginal atrophy and dryness. One possible reason: Women who engage in regular sexual activity may have more natural estrogens circulating in their bodies, which can protect vaginal tissue. (CB: So all of those old wivestales about vaginal dryness as you get older goes right out the window if you can maintain an active sex life well into your 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s ladies! In men, frequent ejaculations are not only linked with better sexual function as they age, but also to a decreased risk of prostate cancer. In one study, researchers at the National Cancer Institute found that men who reported 21 or more ejaculations per month had a 33 percent lower risk of developing prostate cancer over their lifetimes, compared to those ejaculating 4 to 7 times per month. “The authors suggest that periodically emptying out the prostate by ejaculating may get rid of potentially carcinogenic breakdown products from the sperm and the semen,” explains Dr. Komisaruk.

Regulate Your Hormones (CB: Fewer Hot Flashes! Slow down the aging process! )

Women who have intercourse at least once a week (when they don’t have their periods) tend to have more regular menstrual cycles, more fertile basal body temperature patterns, and substantially higher levels of estrogen than those who are less sexually active, according to research by reproductive biologist Winnifred Cutler, Ph.D., founder of the Athena Institute for Women’s Wellness in Chester Springs, PA. Added bonuses: “Women who had regular weekly sex—think of it like a paycheck; never missing a week—were more fertile and they aged more slowly,” notes Dr. Cutler. When they reached menopause, they also had fewer hot flashes and better bone density and cardiovascular health.

So that’s the story: Having regular sex with someone you love is not only good for your relationship, it’s good for the health and well-being of your body and mind, too.

Regarding the ease on pain,
Here’s an epiphany for a thought….this is so freaking true…After breaking up with my source of sex two years ago, I decided that abstinence/ celibacy was my new found glory. Prior to my abstinence “try” i was having sex/sinning like crazy….and never experienced any menstrual pains. I wrote the pains off to PMS and just dealt with it for the past two years. I did not have any sexual stimulation for about a year and a half and was contuining to suffer major “PMS” pains. Then thank Jesus I found the man/husband of my dreams….started having intercourse “like rabbits” and just realized through this article that the pains are no longer there. I never thought anything of it. And of course I was being stimulated days before the dreaded red beast came. Just thought I’d share this info….
