Sex Toys: Are they bad for you? Do you get addicted to sex toys?

by Chrystal Bougon on December 21, 2009

“Am I going to get addicted to my vibrator?”  “Once I start using a vibrator, will I need one every time?”  “Will I still be able to climax just from using my traditional methods of masturbation?”  “Does using a vibrator make it more difficult to climax or will it make me numb?”  These are just a few of the questions we have heard over the years about sex toys and the concerns women and men have about them.

They are all very valid concerns. Let’s start with the definition of a vibrator from the wikipedia: Vibrator:  “a device for massage or sexual pleasure.”

Speaking personally, as a woman who has used some sort of vibrator on a semi regular basis for over 20 years, I can tell you that NO, you will not get addicted to them. (Atleast I haven’t and I have quite a few toys!)

For starters, sex toys ARE NOT a replacement for a partner.  (See our blog  SEX TOYS ARE AN APPETIZER.) They are just an enhancement to your sex life. What I have found from talking with over 10,000 women about sex toys in the last 7 years is that using a vibrator actually makes it easier to have an orgasm. Just like anything, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

What women often tell us is that once they tried their first vibrator, it changed their whole life. It helped them to understand HOW a woman could have an orgasm every time she has sex and why some women LOVE sex so much. Once you learn how to have an orgasm and it happens so much more easily for you, it changes your perspective on sex… especially partner sex. (We all know intercourse was designed for reproduction and the male orgasm.) Most women tell me that using a vibrator with their partner makes sex so much more pleasureable and that they start to look forward to more intimacy in their lives.  Once they found out how simple it can be to acheive an orgasm, they wanted more sex and their resentful attitude about being intimate started to melt away.  EUREKA!

My feeling is that if using a vibrator every time you have sex means you have an ORGASM every time you have sex, then BINGO! We have achieved our goal. Someone could look at that as an addiction or a “crutch”, but I say if it brings you a climax go for it. Using a small vibe like the SILVER BULLET or the SLENDER SENSATIONS is small enough to fit between any two people and will provide the female partner enough clitoral stimulation to pretty much guarantee she has an orgasm every time the two of you make love. WHAT IS THE HARM IN THAT?

Of course, this is such an individual preference. But, as far as I can tell, there has never been any research that talks about vibrators creating disfunction. Most of the research I can find on this subject endorse vibrators for women to improve their ability to climax.

This is a very interesting article about real Medical Research about Women and Men that use Sex Toys and I really liked these statistics from Sexuality.About.Com : .  “71.5% of Women Never Experienced Any Side Effects.”  Except maybe an explosive orgasm!

Like with most research when it comes to Women’s health issues, there is not much good research out there, but just from my own personal research, vibrators seem to bring MUCH more pleasure then pain!

In the interest of full disclosure, I do SELL SEX TOYS so it’s in my best interest to share POSITIVE research about sex toys! My online store is called and we like to think of it as a VERY tasteful online romance store where we feature better toys for better sex in as tasteful a way as you can when you sell sex toys!
